Common Questions

Do I need a referral?

For those using private medical insurance, a GP referral may be required, but most insurers now offer access to a GP service. If you are self-funding, you can book directly to meet Dr Sehmi.

 
When you come to Dr Sehmi, he will start with a detailed conversation to understand your symptoms and your concerns. Dr Sehmi will carry out a complete cardiovascular examination and use this information to recommend further investigations if necessary. It is helpful if you bring any previous letters or test results. These may be from previous specialists you have seen, other cardiologists or from your GP.

Once all tests are complete. Dr Sehmi’s secretary will arrange a follow up appointment to go through your results in detail and discuss treatment options in a clear and concise way.

Dr Sehmi works out of three clinics within Hertfordshire. OSD Healthcare, Spire Bushey Hospital, BUPA Health Centre St Albans His team will ensure you are offered the earliest appointment available, at the location which is most convenient.

Dr Sehmi has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating all types of cardiac conditions. He does not see children aged below 18 years.

Treatments Questions

Why do I need more tests when I come for a private consultation?

If you have already had tests with your GP or other specialists, these are helpful and Dr Sehmi will be able to access this or you can bring them to your appointment. Dr Sehmi will use this information and his clinical assessment to decide if additional tests are required.
While tests you have had elsewhere provides some reassurance, they may not be looking at where the problem is. Dr Sehmi has access to basic and advanced tests such as cardiac CT and MRI, which can assess the heart in greater detail to accurately pinpoint the reason for symptoms.

Dr Sehmi is a strong advocate for preventing heart problems before the arise. He will discuss the benefits of regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and making good diet and lifestyle choices. However, if a significant problem is identified, lifestyle interventions may not be enough and medical treatments or procedures may be necessary. Dr Sehmi has extensive experience in managing all cardiac conditions and uses guideline directed and cutting edge protocols to treat his patients.

Dr Sehmi is a specialist in all aspects of non-invasive testing. He offers a comprehensive array of basic and advanced non-invasive investigations including ECG, echocardiography (including complex echo), stress testing, blood pressure monitoring, holter monitoring, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.
Should any interventions be required, through his network of world-leading specialists, Dr Sehmi can arrange any cardiac procedures that is required.
